Advantages of Computers:
1. Speed:
The speed of a computer is measured in terms of the number of instructions that it can perform or execute in a second. The speeds of computers are measured in milliseconds (10~3 sec), micro-seconds (10*6 sec), and nano-seconds (10~9sec). Computers are superfast machines and can process millions of instructions per second. Smaller computers can execute thousands of instructions per second, while the more complex machines can execute millions of instructions per second.
2. Accuracy:
Computers are very accurate. They are capable of executing hundreds of instructions without any errors. They do not make mistakes in their computations. They perform each and every calculation with the same accuracy.
3. Efficiency
The efficiency of computers does not decrease with age. The computers can perform repeated tasks with the same efficiency any number of times without exhausting there selves. Even if they are instructed to execute millions of instructions, they are capable of executing them all with the same speed and efficiency without exhaustion.
4. Storage Capability
Computers are capable of storing large amounts of data in their storage devices. These dev ices occupy very less space and can store millions of characters in condensed forms. These storage devices typically include floppy disks, tapes, hard disks, CDs etc, the data stored on these devices can be retrieved and reused whenever it is required in future
5. Versatility
Computers are very versatile. They are capable not only of performing complex mathematical tasks of science and engineering, but also other nonnumerical operations fielding air-line reservation, electricity bills, data base management etc
6. Multitasking
Multitasking is one of the major advantage of computer. Person can perform multiple task, multiple operation, calculate numerical problems within few seconds. Computer can perform trillion of instructions per second
7. Data Security
Protecting digital data is known as data security. Computer provide security from destructive forces and from unwanted action from unauthorized users like cyber attack or access attack
Limitations of Computers:
Although the computers of today are highly intelligent and sophisticated they have their own limitations. The computer cannot think on its own, since it does not have its own brain. It can only do what is has been programmed to do. It can execute only those jobs that can be expressed as a finite set of instructions to achieve a specific goal. Each of the steps has to be clearly defined. The computers do not learn from previous experience nor can they arrive at a conclusion without going through all then intermediate steps. However the impact of computers on today’s society in phenomenal and they are today an important part of the society
Disadvantage of computer as follows
1. Virus and hacking attacks
Virus is a worm and hacking is simply an unauthorized access over computer for some illicit purpose. Virus is being transferred from email attachment, viewing an infected website advertisement, through removable device like USB etc. once virus is transferred in host computer it can infect file, overwrite the file etc.
For example: Huge portion of internet was going down including Twitter, Netflix, Reddit and CNN in October 2016 because the largest DDoS attack was launched on service provider DYN using IoT Botnet.
2. Online Cyber Crimes
Online cyber-crime means computer and network may have used in order to commit crime. Cyberstalking and Identity theft are the points which comes under online cyber-crimes. For example: one may get the access of the access to your shopping account like amazon account now that person will be able to know your personal details like debit card or credit card number which can be than misused.
3. Reduction in employment opportunity
Mainly past generation was not used of the computer or they have the knowledge of computer they faced a big problem when computer came in field. As we have seen in banking sector senior bank employees faced this problem when computer came to the banking sector.
4. Health-Issues
Prolonged use of personal computers result in many health related issues. Eye strain, headache, back pain, etc. are some of them.
5. Fake News
Computers enable a wide array of data sharing options. But, this becomes a medium for spread of spurious news. Many cases are there when fake news is shared among people using messaging apps.
6. E- waste
After the use of computers, it is nothing but a form of e-waste. This contributes negatively by releasing harmful toxic materials.
7. Lack of Concentration and Irritation
As multitasking makes our lives easier, but it comes with its disadvantages. We try to focus on multiple tasks and notifications. This leads to decrease in attention span and lack of concentration on one particular task. Also, addictive games played on computer contribute towards irritability when not allowed to play.
